Friday, March 28 "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" day 2 of slide show analysis

Continuing with the analysis of the poem. As with yesterday, take notes; mark up the text.

Getting ahead: I will not be in school on Monday. I believe that Mr. Delahant will be your substitute.
What's happening on Monday? Your substitute will hand out "Prufrock" vocabulary 2, for which there will be an assessment on Monday, April 7. In addition, your class work will consist of working with the "The Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and an accompanying graphic organizer (see copy below). You may work with a partner; however, the material is due at the end of class on Monday. This is in preparation for writing an essay in the library lab on Thursday and Friday. (more detailed information to come)  You will be using the notes your take in class, your graded graphic organizer for Monday and some other material. If you are legally absent on Thursday or Friday, you will need to find an opportunity to type the essay; otherwise, there is an automatic 10 deduction. (think lunch, study hall or after school)

Thursday, March 27 Prufrock slide show


Due Friday, March 28: "Prufrock" vocabulary 1 test
    What you should have turned in for a grade so far this marking period: Introduction to Modernism questions number 1-9. Numbers 1-8 were completed in class last Friday, whilst number 9, which was the surrealist painting about World War I by the Italian artist De Chirico, was completed this past Monday in class.  On Tuesday, each student was assigned one Robert Frost poem.  I took these as a class participation grade. 

In class today: we are continuing with "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by looking at a detailed power point. Unfortunately, I cannot put this on the blog, but I can put a copy on your school drive or your thumb drive. These slides will greatly increase your understanding of the poem.

Wednesday, March 26 day 1 "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock


Due on Friday, March 28: Prufrock vocabulary 1 test.
In class: introduction to the T. S. Eliot's poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"
This is a quintessential example of modernist poetry. As a review, what should you be looking for?

1. implied, rather than overtly stated themes.

2. fragments (think of a puzzle with pieces missing; consider the world after World War I).

3. omitting of expositions (background information about events, settings, characters that help the reader make sense of the novel, short story or, in this case, the poem). 

4. omitting transitions (think of a dream, where anything and everything may be juxtaposed without any seeming logic.)

5. omitting a resolution (so how does the story play out? who knows? You figure it out for yourself.

6. lack of explanations ( why did this happen? Again, you figure it out; draw your own conclusions.)

7. sense of uncertainty, paralysis and ANGST.



ex·is·ten·tial·ism

 a chiefly 20th century philosophical movement embracing diverse doctrines but centering on analysis of individual existence in an unfathomable universe and the plight of the individual who must assume ultimate responsibility for acts of free will without any certain knowledge of what is right or wrong or good or bad
How can we define it simply?

Existentialism is a  philosophy that emphasizes the


isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or 

indifferent world in  regards human existence as 

unexplainable, and 

stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the 

consequences of one's acts.






We will be working with the poem in class over the next five days, writing in the lab next Wednesday and Thursday.  The goal today is to listen once to the poem.
