Monday, March 3- finishing How the Other Half Lives...Maggie vocabulary 1

In class: finishing up the introduction Jacob Riis' How the Other Half Lives. This is due at the end of class today. Remember that you are responding to only 3 of the questions, each response being a minimum of 50 words. You should incorporate text from the introduction and the chapter "The Genesis of the Tenement"

Anyone who had excused absence on Friday needs to make up the vocabulary test. Thank you to all the folks who were on the field trip and took the test.

8.    philanthropy (noun)- helping others,  especially donating money to worthy causes
9.    furtive (adjective)- being cautious or appearing suspicious
10.        obscure (adjective)- not clearly seen, understood, or expressed
11.        complacent (adjective)- contented (unworried and satisfied) -- often to a fault
12.        zeal (noun)- active interest and enthusiasm

13.        ostentatious (adjective-intended to attract notice and impress others -- especially with wealth in a vulgar way
