Monday, May 5 review of "My Last Duchess" and prep for essay.

In class: 1. handing back "My Last Duchess" graphic organizers. If you have not turned yours in, this is your last opportunity, as we are reviewing these in class.
             2. preparation for "My Last Duchess" essay. Class handout / copy below.
    We are in the library lab Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The essay is due at the end of class on Thursday.


Literary and rhetorical terms 1      week of May 5    test on Friday, May 9
1.     nostalgia- (noun)- a yearning for the past or for some condition that cannot be recovered
2.     myth- (noun)- a story about the origins of a culture’s beliefs, usually derived from oral tradition.
3.     diction-(noun)-specific word choice used in a piece of writing for effect, correctness and clarity
4.     didactic- (adjective)-intended to instruct or educate
5.     digression-(noun)-a turning away from the main subject or discussion or main argument in writing
6.     epigraph-(noun)- a quotation placed at the beginning of a piece of literature to provide ideas about what will follow
7.     epiphany-(noun)- a sudden, powerful and often spiritual life-changing realization reached in an everyday moment.
8.     logos- (noun)-a mode of persuasion that uses logic and reason as a means to convince an audience of the presenter’s argument.
9.     ethos (noun)- a mode of persuasion that uses ethical appeal as a means to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character.
10.                        pathos- (noun) – a mode of persuasion that uses emotion to convince an audience of the presenter’s argument.

Essay topic: How is the character of the Duke communicated in the dramatic monologue “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning?
Think about the following:

what is actually being communicated?  Intentionally, unintentionally
control

Mechanics: begin with an outline. What is your thesis? What points are you going to discuss?
                     minimum 5 paragraphs
                      minimum 500 words
                      typed
                      MLA heading
                       Weave in textual evidence. Make sure you have an analysis statement for every point you make; that is why is what you said significant in relation to the original thesis in your introduction?

                      Due at the close of class on Thursday, May 8. That gives you 3 days in the lab. Make sure to save your work to your school drive or a thumb drive. You may, of course, work on this at home or during a study hall.

                       This is the first grade of the 6th marking period.
