Friday, September 6, prefix quiz; List of unit texts: close reading: looking for details in a Thomas Nast image.

Please find below a list of the textual material we will be using for our reading closely unit. (class handout)
A note: well-done yesterday on the bank robber case. Here's how the grading went.
95 points: you had specific details to support your claim, and there were no spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.
90 points: details, but a verb tense, spelling, grammar or punctuation error.
85 points: well-written, but lacking details from the clip
75 points: lacking details and error(s) in spelling, punctuation, grammar or verb tenses.
AVOID SAYING "I think" or "I believe:"

Due Monday, September 9: suffix quiz. This will follow the same format as the prefix quiz today. Also know the meaning of analogous and paradigm (a typical example or pattern of something; a model.).

In class: 1. quick prefix quiz.
2. With your assigned partners, examine the above image (class handout or use the above, if you are absent). Be prepared to answer the following:  What stands out and why as I examine the image?

1. Look at the title. How does it direct your thinking?
2.  Each group take out a sheet of paper and write your full names at the top.
3.  List ten details that you observe in the image.
4 Choose five of the details and write what each indicates to you.
5. Class share out.
6. Class participation grade: Rewrite the caption and a sentence that supports it.
