Today's chapter is focused on Cholly Breedlove.
What do we know about him so far?
Questions from Yesterday Answered:
Why did Pauline Breedlove's foot effect her whole life?
Disability was different back before World War II, many people were persecuted for this fact alone. In addition to the rising craze in being "beautiful" and the idea of the movies, deformities were not taken lightly!
What are the italics about?
These are Pauline's own thoughts, her inner feelings. Toni Morrison herself said that she didn't like how this chapter turned out, that the effect she was going for wasn't achieved.
Why does the novel focus on the bad times for the Breedloves?
This is an idea that is central to the main plot structure and themes that the novel presents. Who does this negativity effect most profoundly?
Will Pecola and Moureen become friends?
Do you think it's possible for characters in this world to be friends cross-racially? It'll be tough at the very least.
Will Pecola ever feel beautiful?
We will have to wait and see!
Why did Cholly's personality change?
We find out today!
How did the Breedlove family turn out the way they are?
In this novel, beauty/ugliness are not only something that people enact as well as posses, but ugliness is toxic. Remember how in the beginning the Breedlove ugliness was centered on Cholly and how he spread it.
Who is the protagonist?
Pecola Breedlove isn't a traditional protagonist, but she is the person whom the novel centers on. This may be confusing given the fact that Claudia MacTeer is the primary narrator.
